Meet Larissa Balik, MS, OTR/L
Founder of Defining Development
Parenting consists of endless decisions to make, constant concerns, and frustrating situations to navigate…and that’s when things are going smoothly! Of course being a parent is one of life’s most fulfilling and joyful roles, but it’s also easy to find yourself overwhelmed and on edge. If your parenting journey involves supporting a neurodivergent child living in a world full of ableist messages and accessibility barriers, added stressors and a sense of isolation can at times make it feel unmanageable.
Larissa Balik was inspired to create Defining Development following over a decade of work with families facing similar experiences. Based on her background with children and parents across inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, and school settings, Larissa recognized a need for families to have more comprehensive and individualized support through a relationship-based approach. Defining Development strives to nurture each child’s social-emotional growth and developmental progression and to enhance parents’ capacity to connect and engage with their children.
Larissa founded Defining Development in 2022. She has spent her career supporting children of all ages and their parents. Larissa has worked in renowned pediatric institutions, including Children’s Specialized Hospital and Franciscan Hospital for Children. She has served in a senior position and collaborated with multi-disciplinary teams and organizational leadership. Larissa has engaged in over 180 hours of continuing education and pursued a dual-certification in DIRFloortime®, receiving her Advanced Certificate in 2023. She has a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, graduating at the top of her class from Boston University.
While her work is extremely humbling and gratifying, two of her most fulfilling roles in life include wife and mother. Becoming a mother to twins has given her a unique perspective on the parenting journey and additional inspiration to support parents in a comprehensive way. While juggling all of these important roles, she also firmly believes in the importance of self-care. During moments to herself, Larissa enjoys being outdoors, baking, exercising, drawing, and organizing things (closets, playrooms…you name it!). Being fully present and listening to disabled and autistic self-advocates allows Larissa to continuously expand her knowledge with the ultimate goal of empowering her clients.
Larissa is endlessly grateful for the opportunity to earn your trust and partner with you in life’s defining moments.
“All children have within them the potential to be great kids. It’s our job to create a great world where this potential can flourish.”
